5 tips to prevent identity theft
Identity is a hot issue for the last 10 years because it’s easy for criminals to get your identity – if you’re not careful. I practice some unconventional habits to prevent identity theft, and I recommend you to do the same if you don’t want to get into the hassle of trying to recover your money when some jerk takes a loan out in your name.
So without further ado, here are some things to prevent identity theft:
1. Learn about email phishing.
2. Lear about social engineering – basically crimminals who pose as an employee from a bank and try to get your info over the phone. On time this guy told me online that someone called and his mom gave her social security number over to him on the phone! :O
3. Shred your trash (bills, pay statements, personal etters etc)
4. Don’t use debit card – it’s too easy for crimminals to make a duplicate copy of it. Carry cash with you or without. I paid my $1200 laptop with cash ;D
5. Use a banking machine that appears to be legit. I only use ATM machine from the bank branch only. I don’t use those shady looking ones at the convenient store or at the mall, because it’s easy for criminals to mount a device on the ATM which can duplicate the debit card.
6. Don’t give your social security number, correct birth of date, or full name to anyone you don’t know or trust. Nor should you give your home address or phone number.
Follow the above rules and you should be ahead of the game. Most criminals go “dumpster diving” for your trash to get info about you, and stuff like that. Be awry but don’t get too paranoid and you should be good :)
