What to do with your life (Teen Edition)

I know almost every teenager ponder at one point or another on what they want to be after they graduate high school – and from my experience, most don’t really know.

Why is there such a lack of clear decision in life?

Because they think their job as their identity. “What do you want to be when you grow up” usually translates into “What kind of job would you like to specialize in?” and that is where the indecision arise.

Only if I knew that earlier it would save me a hundred hours or so walking down the forest trail close to my home and pondering the question …

They think they have to pick a career they really like, in order to rationalize the time and money spent on college. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

“You’re not your job” said Tyler Durden.

Now that you understand not to take your job as a your primarily identity, feel free to explore other possibilities in life as oppose to going to college. If you want to join the military, go ahead. Travel to another part of the world and live there for a year (living in certain parts of Europe and Asian is very cheap by the way!) Whatever you do, don’t take financial security too seriously.

Sometimes people think taking a government job would lead to “job security” and be “set for life” after working there for 35 years, but would you do that for 35 years ? And the job is boring? I’ve been down that path before so don’t bother trying it unless you absolutely love the job, or think the world is a scary place and need financial security to ensure your survival.

Fight the temptation to go to college if you truly don’t want to go. I didn’t go to college, it was no big deal. And no, you won’t be working minimum wage or working at Mcdonalds for long if you use your brains. Don’t let the media “income average” states for high school graduate scare you into submission. Silly mass media.

I think it’s pretty cool when you don’t commit money and time into college (most college goers don’t graduate anyways), you can choose to be an apprentice at a job you’re interested in and get paid at the same time.

What I say is merely encouragement on how you want to live your life, because it’s entirely up to you. You will figure out what you want to do with your life as long as you don’t take your job as your primarily identity. Relax, give yourself time and you’ll figure it out.
